Awareness campaign about the negatives of cesarean section
The number of cesarean section births is increasing in general in the northeastern regions of Syria, which negatively affects women’s health in the long term. With the aim of raising the level of health education among them in the Shahba and Jazeera regions, health education teams affiliated with the Kurdish Red Crescent, in coordination with the Women’s Committee, have conducted a series of awareness lectures on the benefits of natural childbirth, breastfeeding, and the negatives of cesarean section and artificial feeding. This also included the distribution of thousands of awareness brochures within camps and villages, as well as medical points affiliated with the Kurdish Red Crescent and villages.
With the provision of proper healthcare, it is not impossible to overcome diabetes.
We, at the Kurdish Red Crescent, consider healthcare and providing medical services as our main goal. Ibrahim Khudair Al-Hamoud, a fifty-year-old displaced person from the city of Serekaniye/Ras al-Ain, lives in the Serekaniye “Al-Talaeen” camp in eastern Al-Hasakah. He suffers from diabetes, which has affected his right foot. He receives care from the Kurdish Red Crescent point, where the medical team visits him regularly to receive care in the emergency department, including cleaning and sterilizing the affected foot, providing diabetes medication anti-biotics from the point’s pharmacy, after examinations and dietary instructions from the internal clinic, Mr. Ibrahim resumes walking on his feet, heading towards his tent, as if he is saying to the disease, “I will overcome you” .
2,000 monthly beneficiaries of medical services in the Shahba areas
The only medical center in Sardam camp, affiliated with the Kurdish Red Crescent, provides medical services around the clock to more than 3,700 displaced individuals in the camp. It receives approximately 2,000 beneficiaries monthly in the internal, pediatric, gynecological, emergency, pharmacy, leishmaniasis, protection, and psychosocial departments.
It is worth mentioning that the staff at the medical point intensify training related to the medical services provided, especially as winter approaches, as the number of patients increases due to the harsh conditions they are living in, leading to several seasonal diseases.
In Sulaymaniya city the word charity day festival
The Kurdish Red Crescent branch in the Kurdistan Bashour participated in the World Charity Day festival, which was held yesterday (5/9/2023) in the city of Sulaymaniyah. The festival was attended by 45 organizations, religious institutions, and a group for showcasing charitable humanitarian projects and works. The Kurdish Red Crescent also showcased the projects and works it has implemented in previous years to support refugees, internally displaced persons, and the local community in the Kurdistan region.
The Kurdish Red Crescent provided immediate and urgent first aid to two children from the village of Al-Salmasa in the countryside of Tel Tamr.
as a result of their exposure to the explosion of war remnants. Most of the injuries were in the abdomen and legs. After providing all necessary and urgent medical care, they were transferred to hospitals in Al-Hasakah city for treatment.
The Kurdish Red Crescent continues to work on assisting the victims and providing medical referral services, as well as psychological and social support when needed.
The Kurdish Red Crescent also urges for the acceleration and intensification of all efforts to remove mines and unexploded ordnance, and to enhance support for the rights of children in a safe and protected environment due to the recurrence of these unfortunate incidents caused by armed groups leaving behind ammunition and weapons that can pose a threat to civilians, especially children, at any moment.
The Kurdish Red Crescent has alleviated the burden of baby supplies in the Shahba camps.
In light of the high prices of goods and necessities, especially for children, which adds additional burdens to the displaced, our teams distributed diapers to children from newborns up to one year old in the Shahba areas camps (Berkadan camp – Sardam camp – Afrin camp – Al-Awda camp – Keshetar camp). The total number of beneficiaries from the distribution was 300 children.
Awareness of the importance of breastfeeding is ongoing
Breastfeeding is one of the best investments to save infants lives, especially in improving health, social, and economic development.
As part of the activities of World Breastfeeding Week in August, the health education team at the Kurdish Red Crescent points in camps in northern and eastern Syria continues to provide guidance and awareness-raising tips to mothers during their visits to those points, including awareness about seasonal diseases such as diarrhea, and distributing brochures to them.
Breast milk is considered the ideal food for infants as it is safe, clean, and contains antibodies that help protect against many common childhood diseases.
Breast milk also provides all the energy and nutrients that the baby needs in the first few months of life, continuing to provide up to more than half of the child’s nutritional needs during the second half of the first year, and even a third during the second year of life.
The leishmaniasis pandemic in Tel Temer and its countryside.
The number of leishmaniasis cases in 2022 reached almost 20 thousand cases in Tel Temer and its countryside, and this was caused by the Khabur river being extremely polluted due to the water being cut off by the turkish state, and also because of lack of awareness and knowledge among the local population on how to take protective measures and how to treat the disease.
But thanks to the efforts of the KRC center and the health education team and their house visits that where happening all year long, the pandemic was swiftly and effectively delt with. And last year, KRC made huge efforts to provide medicine and treatment to the patients. However, some patient used herbal alternatives to treat the disease which inevitably made their condition to worsen, and the medical team advices not to use these methods and to come to the leishmaniasis center to recive treatment and medicine if new cases of the disease occured.
