Health risks and preventive measures at reception points
/0 Comments/in WASH/by nerudaThe concentration of large numbers of displaced people at key reception points increases the chances of spreading infectious diseases, such as diarrhea, scabies, smallpox, jaundice, worms, and leishmaniasis, leading to serious health risks and exacerbating suffering under these difficult conditions. Health education teams, in collaboration with the WASH team, distributed hygiene sacks and disseminated health guidelines. However, there is still an urgent need to provide hygiene tools and strengthen the sanitation system to ensure the health and safety of internally displaced persons (IDPs).

These assessments aimed to identify emergency interventions in humanitarian response within the water and sanitation sector. The measures included tests to monitor water quality, as well as identifying hygiene needs. Information and lists were also shared with partner organizations and the Office of Organisation Affairs, facilitating the rapid implementation of interventions to alleviate the suffering of internally displaced persons (IDPs).

Thousands receive clean water in Al-Shahba camps.
/0 Comments/in Health, WASH/by nerudaThe Kurdish Red Crescent, with the support and cooperation of the Area Metropolitana de Barcelona (AMB) and Mezzaluna Rossa Kurdistan Italia Onlus, has launched an important initiative to construct two wells equipped with solar energy systems. This project aims to provide sustainable solutions for accessing clean drinking water near the Serdem and Berxdan camps and medical points in the Shahba region, which is experiencing a massive influx of displaced persons, particularly from Afrin, due to the dire humanitarian conditions faced by the population.
The residents of Shahba face numerous challenges, as the area has been affected by various health and environmental crises, ranging from the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic to the devastating earthquake that struck northern and western Syria last year. Therefore, the provision of clean drinking water is a pressing necessity for the health of the local community and is a significant step towards enhancing essential infrastructure and improving the daily living conditions for the displaced, as well as reducing reliance on non-renewable resources through the use of solar energy systems.
