Water and Environment Project: Towards Healthier and Sustainable Education
In response to the needs of local residents, and in coordination with the Directorate of Water and the Municipality of Qamishlo, the Kurdish Red Crescent, with the support of Àrea Metropolitana de Barcelona (AMB), implemented the “Emergency Water Response” project.
As part of this initiative, two wells were drilled in the neighborhoods of (Alaya and Hilaliya) and equipped with submersible pumps powered by solar energy.
Each well was connected to a main water tank with a capacity of 5,000 liters, which in turn supplies a distribution system consisting of three secondary tanks (2,000 liters each) strategically placed within the targeted neighborhoods. This setup ensures broader access to safe water for the largest possible number of residents.
The project also included specialized training sessions for commune members and the Water Department staff on:
* Protecting solar power systems and maintaining wells.
* Operating the wells seasonally.
* Water chlorination techniques using chlorine tablets.
This project comes as a direct response to the growing need for safe and reliable water sources for the city’s population.
Within the second phase of the “Solar Energy for NES 2” project with Medico International, the Kurdish Red Crescent Organization installed the solar panels for drinking water wells in the villages of Najmouk, Girbawi, and Harm Rash. These villages had long suffered from the lack of basic electricity, making it extremely difficult for residents to access water.
This step marks a positive turning point in the daily lives of the residents. In addition to solving the water issue, the project has clear environmental and economic benefits by relying on renewable and environmentally friendly energy sources. The Work is still ongoing on the fourth well in the village of Kharab Kurti.
As a continuation of the activity to support water laboratories through the partnership with medico international Schweiz, which comes within the context of continuous efforts to improve the quality of water monitoring services by providing the necessary support to the water laboratories affiliated with the General Directorate of Water in North and East Syria, the Kurdish Red Crescent organization delivered laboratory materials and reagents to the main water laboratories in (Hasaka – Qamishli – Raqqa – Tabqa) with the aim of developing the skills of technical staff and raising the efficiency of the laboratories to ensure that the necessary analyses are conducted with greater accuracy and effectiveness.
Every day, the Kurdish Red Crescent center in the Abu Khashab camp, located east of Deir ez-Zor, receives about 120 IDPs. Each clinic in the center (internal medicine, pediatrics, and gynecology) sees around 40 cases daily, which range from regular check-ups to emergency care. They provide medical services and appropriate examinations for all age groups, along with distributing medications, while ambulance services are on standby 24/7 for any emergency situations.
s the drinking water crisis continues in the city of Al-Hasakah, and in coordination with the communes, the Kurdish Red Crescent is making ongoing efforts to distribute drinking water to residents. This comes after the WASH team confirmed the safety and quality of the water before distribution using a chlorine level testing device, ensuring the health of those benefiting from these services.
