Thousands receive clean water in Al-Shahba camps.

30 July، 2024/in Health, WASH/by neruda

The Kurdish Red Crescent, with the support and cooperation of the Area Metropolitana de Barcelona (AMB) and Mezzaluna Rossa Kurdistan Italia Onlus, has launched an important initiative to construct two wells equipped with solar energy systems. This project aims to provide sustainable solutions for accessing clean drinking water near the Serdem and Berxdan camps and medical points in the Shahba region, which is experiencing a massive influx of displaced persons, particularly from Afrin, due to the dire humanitarian conditions faced by the population.

The residents of Shahba face numerous challenges, as the area has been affected by various health and environmental crises, ranging from the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic to the devastating earthquake that struck northern and western Syria last year. Therefore, the provision of clean drinking water is a pressing necessity for the health of the local community and is a significant step towards enhancing essential infrastructure and improving the daily living conditions for the displaced, as well as reducing reliance on non-renewable resources through the use of solar energy systems.

Medical institutions play a vital role in providing health care to communities, especially in areas lacking basic services.
In this regard, the Kurdish Red Crescent shows a strong commitment to delivering medical and health services to the residents of North and East Syria, with a focus on remote areas, where the primary health care center in Al-Shadada town is an example of this, as it provides a wide range of services including inpatient, gynecological and pediatric clinics.

Statement regarding the targeting of our medical teams

1 June، 2024/in Emergency, Health, Protection, Reports/by neruda
Today, May 31, 2024, several areas in northern and eastern Syria were targeted by Turkish state aircraft. In response, Kurdish Red Crescent ambulance teams intervened to transport and treat the injured and victims of these attacks.
While a medical team was performing their duty and attempting to reach the injured, they were targeted by Turkish aircraft in Amuda area near the village of Hatimiyah, resulting in the ambulance being completely out of service.
This is not the first time that the Turkish state has targeted ambulances operating in the humanitarian field, which bear clear Symbols of the Red Cross and Red Crescent.
As a humanitarian organization primarily operating in northern Syria, we cannot fulfill our humanitarian duty without adequate protection for our teams. Therefore, we call on partner and international organizations to stand against these strikes by the Turkish state, which openly target workers in the humanitarian and service sectors in northern Syria.
